Developing Footballers Beyond the Pitch

At Alpha Football Academy (AFA), we believe that developing a footballer is about much more than improving technical ability, physical fitness or tactical understanding. Football can open doors, create opportunities and shape careers, but the character of a young player determines how he responds when those opportunities come.
For this reason, AFA has made spiritual development and character formation an important part of its player-development philosophy.
Through a partnership with Athletes in Action, AFA has created a platform where young players are encouraged to understand the relationship between their faith, character, discipline and sporting journey.
The partnership has provided the Academy with a regular opportunity to engage players in meaningful conversations about Christianity, personal values, purpose and what it means to represent Christ both on and off the football pitch.
Weekly Spirituality and Sports Sessions
A key component of this partnership is the weekly Spirituality and Sports session led by Mr. Reuben Ashafa of Athletes in Action.
The sessions provide a safe and engaging environment where AFA players can listen, ask questions, reflect and learn from Scripture.
Rather than treating spirituality as something separate from football, the sessions help players understand that their sporting journey can also become a platform for living out their faith.
The players explore Scriptures that speak about qualities that are essential not only to a Christian life but also to the development of successful athletes:
- Discipline and self-control
- Perseverance
- Humility
- Integrity
- Respect
- Courage
- Teamwork
- Leadership
- Responsibility
- Faith and trust in God
- Dealing with success and failure
- Purpose and personal identity
Through these conversations, players are encouraged to understand that talent is a gift, but character is a responsibility.
Learning Through the Stories of Christian Athletes
One of the most engaging aspects of the programme is the use of Gospel-inspired movies and stories about athletes who are believers in Christ.
The players watch films and documentaries that portray the journeys of Christian athletes, including the challenges they faced, the sacrifices they made, the moments of doubt and disappointment they experienced, and how their faith influenced their lives and careers.
These stories allow AFA players to see that professional athletes are not immune to challenges.
They too experience injuries, rejection, competition, pressure, failure, uncertainty and difficult decisions.
However, the stories also demonstrate how faith, discipline, perseverance and a strong sense of purpose can help athletes navigate these challenges.
After each viewing, the players engage in discussions about the lessons from the story and how those lessons can apply to their own lives.
Questions are encouraged.
What would you do if you were rejected by a club?
How would you respond if you were injured at the most important stage of your career?
How would you behave if you suddenly became successful?
What happens when football is taken away?
Who are you beyond being a footballer?
How can you use your talent to serve God and positively influence others?
These conversations help players understand that their identity and worth should not depend entirely on football.
Building Players with Purpose
At AFA, we understand that many young footballers dream of becoming professional players. Some will eventually play at the highest levels of the game, while others may follow different paths.
Our responsibility, therefore, is not simply to prepare them for the possibility of professional football.
It is to prepare them for life.
The partnership with Athletes in Action reinforces this philosophy.
Players are encouraged to understand that football is a platform through which they can develop discipline, build relationships, influence others and potentially make a difference in their communities.
